My Wilson families in Norwood Green commence about 1820 with John Wilson born about 1795. Unfortunately in the 1841 census his birthplace is "not Middlesex" so with no other clues to his identity I am unlikely to get any further back than this date. John died before the 1851 census so no birthplace is known. He was a Farm Bailiff.
John married a local girl, Sarah Niccolls/Nicholls in 1821. Their son George Nicholls Wilson married Emma Smart in 1865 and had a daughter Emma in 1866. Emma lived with her grandmother, Sarah, until she died in 1874. After this she is found as a servant and later a cook in various London homes. Emma′s father died in 1875 and her mother in 1888 after which the family is scattered with most of the children working as servants. Apparently Emma moved to Folkestone, Kent in the early 1890s as a cook. Here she married John Thomas Wilson who originated in Ashford. The family used to say they were some kind of cousins but I have found no evidence to support this idea. However as I do not know where Emma′s grandfather came from the story could prove true. Researching the name Wilson in the London area is very difficult as there are so many in each registration district. However some trips to the Record Office are needed to progess with this family. |
