The first thing you notice is that some individuals made multiple and frequent crossings, so passing through Ellis Island regularly. These were clearly crew on shore before the return voyage. CREWBenjamin James Kellaway b.1884 made 44 crossings between August 1917 and December 1924. He was from Southampton and died in England in 1929.His older brother Arthur Kellaway made only 5 crossings between October 1919 and December 1921 he also stayed in England and died in Southampton 1940. These brothers were from the Southampton line which originated in Poole Dorset. William Charles Frederick Kellaway made 8 crossings in 1921 and 1922. He seems to have given various combinations of his forenames. He was from Southampton but his family go back to the Cerne Abbas line in Dorset. He died 1929 Southampton. He first went to America in October 1907 where he married Eva Mae Moody 25th Jan 1908 Chicago. He and his wife and baby daughter returned for a visit in 1911 and then later in 1920. William′s sister Elsie Irene joined them in 1913. This is what is known about them in America. There are records back to 1727 of the family in Freshwater. They were from the Barnstaple area of North Devon. Maria was the Widow of John Henry Kellaway who died 1910. He was born about 1861 but his origins are not clear he is not on the 1901 census. Walter's wife Lilian May and his younger sister Mary Louisa Kellaway joined them in May 1921. Here is what is known of this family in Barnstaple and Michigan. Walter Henry worked for the Buick Motor Company in Flint MI. They were from a Hartland family of North Devon and were the sons of John Kellaway and Maria Grace West m.1874 Bideford, Devon. Ernest returned to England and settled there but John Ronald stayed and married Alice P Headon about 1912 in Pennsylvania. He may have been in America to perform or to visit his brother, the actor, Cecil Kellaway. This family was originally from Freshwater, Isle of Wight. She was a shorthand typist and bound for Ridgefield N.J. No further information. Freshwater Families William Kellaway and his wife Clara travelled together arriving August 1911. They were already residents of Los Angeles. William b.1848 Weymouth first went to America in March 1879. He was the son of William Thomas Kellaway and Harriet Parker. They were members of the Upwey families of South Dorset. No further information in USA. SEE: Upwey Families Elsie Minnie Kellaway (née Cherrett) made a return visit to England November 1922. Elsie and her two young daughters, Marguerite Helen Kellaway aged 3 and Ruth Mary Kellaway aged 1 year returned to Toronto passing through Ellis Island February 1923. Elsie Minnie Cherrett had married Alfred William Charles Kellaway in 1914 Poole, Dorset. They departed from Bristol, England March 1914 bound for Newfoundland. Alfred b.04.10.1888 Plymouth was the son of James Richard Kellaway born 1852 Bridestowe, Devon and Hannah Ryall. The family can be traced back in the Bridestowe area. Alfred and Elsie are buried Pine Hills Cemetery, Scarborough, Toronto. It is not known if there were older children.
