"HIS MAJESTY THE KING has been graciously pleased to confer the Military Cross on the under mentioned officer in recognition of his gallantry and devotion to duty in the field:-

Lieutenant FRANK GERALD KELLAWAY

For conspicuous gallantry during operations. When the officers of his company had become casualties he rallied his men, led them in the assault, and made good the ground gained."



Frank Gerald Kellaway was born 07 January 1895 in Melbourne, Australia. He won a scholarship to Melbourne University where he studied History and was also a keen member of the Rowing Club and a member of the Melbourne University Rifles.

He was a Law Student when he enlisted as a Private in 22nd Battalion, Australian Imperial Force in May 1915, sailed the following July and served in Egypt, Gallipoli and Europe. He was promoted rapidly and won his Military Cross for conspicuous gallantary at Pozieres 4-5 August 1916 as 2nd Lieut (where he was wounded). He was was made Lieutenant on 28 November 1916.

He died 04 October 1917, killed in action in a barrage at Zonnebeke, Battle of Broodseinde. He is remembered on the Menin Gate, The Australian War Memorial and in his home Parish of Northcote, Melbourne.
