The first mention of the name Trevethan in Perranzabuloe is in the Parish Register in 1615.
The name does not occur in the parish in the 1524 or 1543 subsidies nor in the 1569 muster, although the name occurs in other parts of the Pydar Hundred. William Trevethan signed the Protestation Returns in 1641. There are no records for them in Perranzabuloe for the Poll Tax 1660 or Hearth Tax 1664 My great great grandmother, Jane Trevethan, was born in Perranzabuloe in 1820 the daughter of James Trevethan, a miner and Elizabeth Bowden. James died in 1823 leaving a wife and four living children. The family story was that Jane was an orphan and that an uncle helped support the family by sending money while he was working abroad.
Jane's mother re-married in 1832 to James Ellacott, a miner and sojourner of the parish, whose identity I have been unable to trace. They appear in the 1841 census in Bodmin but it is likely Elizabeth died 1846 and James died not long afterwards. He has not been found in the 1851 census. Jane next appears in Stoke Climsland where she married William Joll in 1837. James Ellacott was a witness at this wedding. Jane was apparently a small but feisty lady, very cornish always, who lived until the age of 85. She was a great favourite with my grandfather who often talked about her to his children. |
