THE HOOPER FAMILIES OF CALSTOCK |

Calstock September 2009 |
There are no Hooper names recorded in the Calstock Protestation returns 1641 nor in the tax returns 1660 and 1664. The Hooper families in Calstock appear to originate from two Hooper families in Calstock during 18th Century. The first family is that of Joseph Hooper and Hannah Colling who were married 30 Jan 1761 in Bere Ferrers. In the Parish Register Joseph was described as “of Calstock” and Hannah as “of Lamerton”. The witnesses were Francis Hooper and Francis Colling. Searches in the Parish registers have recently discovered the baptisms of both Joseph and Hannah in Bere Ferrers. The witness Francis Hooper was probably Joseph′s father and the witness Francis Colling was Hannah′s father. Further checks in this parish have shown that two Hooper men, almost certainly two brothers, John and Francis, born in St Budeaux became the first Hooper families in Bere Ferrers. The second family is that of John Hooper and Dorothy Nettle married 05 Feb 1780. John was described as sojourner of the parish of Calstock. Dorothy was born in Calstock and baptised there 13 Apr 1760. John′s origin has not been found. There is one baptism of William James Hooper 24 Dec 1769 with parents John Hooper and Hannah. Since no other records of these parents have been discovered I think there is a good chance that there has been and error and that the parents were in fact Joseph and Hannah Hooper. The birth is listed this way in the families and descendent tree. The ocupations of these families are principally Carpenters, Blacksmiths, Stonecutters and later Miners. A number of families emigrated to America, Canada and Australia. |
