Calstock

Calstock is a beautiful small town situated on the bank of the River Tamar about 6 miles SW of Tavistock. It is surrounded by the smaller villages of the parish: Albaston, Chilsworthy, Drakewalls, Gunnislake, Harrowbarrow, Latchley & Metherell.

Although essentially a rural farming area, mining occurred from medieval times in the parish. The 19th century demands of industry produced a mining boom in the town when copper was discovered in 1844. Other minerals found nearby were tin, arsenic, lead, silver, wolfram(tungstan) and manganese.

As the mines were exhausted or demand decreased the miners moved on and many emigrated to America and Australia.

The Calstock Parish Archive, which has recently relocated to the Tamar Valley Centre beside the old Drakewalls Mine just 1/4 mile from Gunnislake Station, is a valuable source of information. It has very helpful staff and volunteers who will search their catalogues to find and produce documents, maps and photographs to help you with your research.

More details on opening times, holdings and services can be found on their website at the Calstock Parish Archive Website.
